The smell in the air in the city of Tillamook is undoubtedly cow, and there are lots of them. Because this town is all about the cheese.

The well known Tillamook cheese factory has a self guided tour that leads you upstairs overlooking the packaging process. Throughout the visitors area are videos playing on little tv's showing you the their cheesemaking process. There are also interactive and informative kiosks throughout telling of their history and teaching you in detail what it takes to go from farm to table. They have a large eating area with tables and chairs so you can enjoy food from their deli, coffee shop, ice cream counter and fudge counter. You could easily spend a few hours within the Tillamook Creamery.

Tillamook is located on the Northern Oregon Coast between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Range Mountains. There is world Chinook Salmon fishing with seven major rivers and three major bays. The bays are outstanding for crabbing and clamming with access to ocean fishing. Historically, the Tillamook economy has been primarily dairy farms. The surrounding farmland in the city is used for grazing the milk cattle. These cows supply the Tillamook County Creamery Association's production of cheese, ice cream, yogurt and other dairy products.

We both enjoyed our time at Blue Heron French Cheese Company. We sampled their brie and smoked brie that they make on the property. I thought the smoked brie was the bomb of all bries. We both did a wine tasting consisting of 8 tastes including white, rose, and fruit wines. And I think we sampled every gourmet dip, jelly and syrup they offered. The atmosphere at Blue Heron French Cheese is more sophisticated with a wine tasting room, gourmet shop, a deli, candy and ice cream counter. Outside at the petting farm you don't actually go into an enclosed area to pet the llamas, goats or sheep, but you can feed and pet them through the fence.

Drive along the 3 Capes Scenic Loop. From US101 take highway 131 west then head north on Bayocean Road to Cape Meares State Park. You can step inside the lighthouse and then you can take a picture the infamous and fascinating Sitka Spruce known as the Octopus Tree. The loop will end in the city of Netarts. From there take Netarts Bay Road which runs along Netarts Bay to Cape Lookout State Park. Stop at all of the viewpoints to get spectacular views of the ocean.

Not only did I get my morning coffee we went grocery shopping, got the laundry done, and did some work on the computer. But more importantly we went to both the Tillamook Cheese Factory and Blue Heron Creamery. That is what I call a productive day in Tillamook Oregon
