Somes Sound, Seals Harbor, Northeast Harbor VacationThis is part of an 18 week, 7,532 mile, Vanabode road trip detailed in the
book from Amazon Above: We take a nice hour-long nap with our feet hanging out the back doors of the van, and then leave the Acadia National Park boundary to visit Somes Sound, the only fjord on the East Coast of the United States. The fjord, a long deep narrow valley carved by glaciers and flooded by the sea, is beautiful. The sound varies from a few feet deep on one end to over one hundred fifty feet deep in parts, yet it looks like most other bodies of water here. Green trees line the shore down to the waters edge. Car sized boulders form the beaches and shoulders where we park. A few noisy diesel powered boats rattle past as they make their way towards the searing bright sun. There are few places to actually get down to the water though, so we stay less than an hour.
Above: Afterwards we visit a few marinas and inland harbors in the surrounding area. We stroll through numerous scenic protected water anchorages that offer a quiet respite from our growling tummies.
Seals Harbor is uneventful at low tide, but crowded at full tide. I try to arrange a cheap ride on a mail boat that stops at twelve different islands delivering mail and people. They want me to pay forty dollars for each of us to ride around for three hours on the crowded boat. We pass.
