Matanzas, run by the United States National Park Service, is a real treat. They do not charge us to get in. Once on the grounds we hurry to the welcome center in time to catch the last ferry of the day. A professional interpretive history guide explains all about the making and running of this cool primitive fort while under way. The captain is mostly all business though, making sure we don’t capsize in the heavy current and high winds blowing up the river.

Once back at the main park we join families playing near the parking lot area filled with massive oaks. The heavy branches hang down so low to the ground that children and young mothers are stepping up on them and jumping off. It's fun here at Fort Matanzas.
